Shailene Woodley from ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’

This Monday, ABC Family is bringing back The Secret Life of The American Teenager and Make It Or Break It for their big spring premieres. You all know of my love for ABC Family, so I am pretty excited. Secret Life picks up a little bit down the road from where it left off — Adrian is looking very pregnant and Amy and Ricky want to try and make it work (let’s just say someone wants someone else to get tested). I recently had the chance to catch up with some of the cast, and Shailene Woodley (who plays Amy) talked about Amy/Ricky/Ben, the big premiere, and what she wants to see from Amy going forward.

Do you have a favorite moment from filming the show?
I have a few favorite moments. I just really love working with all the cast. It’s so much fun when everyone’s on set. When we have eighteen people on set at once and we’re all jamming in the trailers — on guitars or singing. The girls — we are huge Willow Smith fans — so we’ll put on “Whip My Hair” and we’ll whip our hair for hours. It’s pretty fun.

Is there someone you would like to have a scene with that you maybe haven’t had in the past?
I’d love to see more scenes between Grace and Amy, just because Megan [Park] is one of my best friends. So it’d be great to work with her more.

What can you tell us about the big premiere that’s coming up?
Oh my gosh, so much drama, so many secrets. There could possibly be a marriage, there could possibly be someone falling in love, someone might fall out of love, someone might move in with someone else, so there’s a lot going on.

And the premiere will definitely address the Amy and Ricky relationship. How will that progress as the season goes on?
Amy and Ricky, they definitely get closer. They definitely work out the kinks that they haven’t really had time to work out before. They are very close and they kind of find a love for each other that they had never found before.

Is there any hope for Amy and Ben or is that kind of over now that Adrian’s pregnant?
I don’t know. I haven’t been told yet but right now, she’s very interested in Ricky and Ricky exclusively.

What would you like to see from Amy as the show goes forward?
I would definitely like to see her — she’s already kind of come into her own — but I would like her to own it even more and live from a positive point of view. So, never complaining, always happy with life. I’d definitely like to see her more positive.

You worked with some Seventh Heaven stars on the premiere, how was that?
They’re amazing. Mackenzie [Rosman] and Beverly [Mitchell] are awesome girls. It was cool to have them back on set and able to see the crew they all worked with. It was really awesome.

And Secret Life tackles a lot of tough issues — pregnancy, STDs/STIs — so why do you think it’s important to talk about those things on a show for teenagers?
Having been in high school three years ago, it’s definitely a big issue. Kids are having sex with other kids and not really paying attention to the consequences. So I think it’s important — whatever your decision is, if you decide to be sexually active that’s totally fine, just make sure you protect yourself and make sure you’re safe about it because if you do get an STD, you have it for the rest of your life. And if you have a child, you have that for the rest of your life as well.
