‘Divergent’ Set Visit Exclusive

July 17, 2013

MTV — If you haven’t hopped aboard the “Divergent” train yet, you may want to hurry: The big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling young-adult novel is barreling down the tracks into theaters — gaining plenty of buzz along the way.

Set in a near-future Chicago in which society has been divided into five factions each representing a different virtue — Abnegation (selflessness), Erudite (intelligence), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (peacefulness) and Candor (honesty) — the story centers around 16-year-old Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who leaves her family’s faction, Abnegation, for the daring world of the Dauntless.

Star Shailene Woodley’s Tris is hardly the first dystopian dame to grace the silver screen, but when MTV News visited the set recently, the 21-year-old actress explained that she doesn’t view her character as your prototypical hotshot heroine.

“The interesting thing about Tris is — I don’t think she’s a badass,” Woodley explained. “She’s not a superhero. She’s not an action star, and I think that there is something really refreshing about bringing a very normal adolescent to life in a way where she has to rise to the occasion and find her brave heart and be really courageous in situations where she doesn’t necessarily want to be.”

Without the safety net of her family and childhood friends, Tris is forced to find a new support system within her faction, which comes to include love interest Four (Theo James) and pal Christina (Zoe Kravitz).

“I think when you find Four, he’s extremely closed and kind of damaged and learned to exist in this world in the best way that he can,” James said of his character. “He’s chosen not to be a leader. He’s been asked several times. He chooses to take a step back, and as things change and people start to die and things go wrong, he realizes that something needs to be done and something needs to change.”

As Tris’ mentor, Four helps the teen uncover secrets about herself that will not only shape her destiny but put her in danger. And according to author Roth, a natural rapport between the two actors was vital for the big-screen adaptation to succeed.

“The chemistry between them is also really strong. It’s kind of important,” she said.

“I really love Theo,” Woodley confirmed. “He has a lot to offer as far as a person. He’s just a good human being. He’s very pure.”

Clearly, the feeling is mutual.

“The chemistry is pivotal but also needs to be natural and real, and I think that’s something we stumbled upon quite easily,” James said. “It was just there.”

Kravitz concurred: “They have amazing chemistry on and off camera. They’re great friends. They can turn it on like that. It’s magic.”

Watch our behind-the-scenes sneak peek of “Divergent” for even more scoop from the set, including how closely the adaptation hews to the novel.

“Divergent,” also starring Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn and Maggie Q, hits theaters March 21, 2014.

Shailene Woodley Does Her Own Stunts in ‘Divergent’

‘Hunger Games,’ ‘Divergent’: The new wave of strong female-led sci-fi

July 12, 2013

LOS ANGELES TIMES – Katniss Everdeen never intended to become an icon for a struggling people. Yet the scrappy, resourceful heroine at the heart of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling “The Hunger Games” trilogy, with her signature braid, incomparable archery skills and defiant spirit, became a rare sort of pop-culture touch point precisely because she came to be embraced by a sometimes lost, sometimes achingly restless tribe: adolescents.

But the wily teen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who trades places with her sister only to emerge as the unlikely victor in a battle to the death, didn’t only inspire Collins’ readers and the filmgoers who turned up for Gary Ross’ 2012 movie adaptation of “The Hunger Games” to the tune of $408 million. Her success has also helped fuel a continuing, voracious appetite in Hollywood for sci-fi inflected tales featuring young women in empowered roles.

“I’m a very strong advocate of taking charge and being a wild woman,” said Shailene Woodley, who stars in next year’s “Divergent.” Set in a dystopian future Chicago, Veronica Roth’s series of novels center on a world where teens are herded together based on specific skills and attributes — when 16-year-old Beatrice Prior finds herself gifted in multiple areas, she’s labeled as an outcast, one who finds herself in a position to affect the future of humanity.

“I think it’s really profound that right now there are so many opportunities in film that depict young women as strong, courageous and taking care of themselves,” said Woodley, who will play Beatrice in the Neil Burger-directed film.

“The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” will both take center stage at San Diego’s Comic-Con International next weekend, the annual pop-culture expo that routinely draws upward of 130,000 people from around the world for a celebration of movies, TV and comic books. The convention does not reveal precise attendance figures, the demographics for the event skew male, though the number of women attending has increased every year for the last 10 to 15 years, with the ratio now 60 to 40 male-female.

Fandom has never been off-limits to men or women, and science fiction and fantasy have long cast confident, competent women in starring roles — Sigourney Weaver’s legendary heroine Ripley is one of the most powerful examples. But at a time when genre properties are enjoying more widespread mainstream popularity than ever before, many find it encouraging that young women have more role models on the page and on screen— heroes as physically adept as their male counterparts but admired more for their internal strength than their fighting skills.

“I’ve always believed that Hollywood has a democratic streak, which means that whatever works, people will go for, and right now there is an audience for these young-adult books,” said Lucy Fisher, former vice chairwoman of Columbia Tri-Star and producer of “Divergent.”

‘The Fault in Our Stars’ To Begin Filming August 26

July 11, 2013

POST-GAZETTE – “Lights, camera, action” are words some Pittsburghers might hear on the street in the months to come.”

The Fault in Our Stars,” a new film from writer-director Josh Boone, will be shot on location in Pittsburgh starting Aug. 26, according to Dawn Keezer, director of the Pittsburgh Film Office.

Mr. Boone, who wrote and directed last year’s family drama “Stuck in Love,” will direct the film based on a screenplay adapted by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who previously collaborated on the script for 2009’s “(500) Days of Summer.”

Mr. Neustadter and Mr. Weber have adapted “The Fault in Our Stars” from the best-selling novel by John Green about two teenagers, terminally ill Hazel Grace Lancaster and ex-basketball player and amputee Augustus Waters, who meet and fall in love while attending a support group for children with cancer.

Although the novel takes place in Indianapolis, the film won’t be shot there. The Pittsburgh scenes will be used for Hazel Grace Lancaster’s house, according to the Internet Movie Data Base. Other filming locations include Amsterdam.

Playing the lead roles are Shailene Woodley (“The Descendants”) as Hazel and newcomer Ansel Elgort as Augustus. Mr. Elgort will also star in this fall’s remake of “Carrie,” a teen horror film based on the Stephen King novel.
